What it does
MCP Engine (part of the SemanticOps project) is a community Model Context Protocol server that lets AI assistants such as Claude and Copilot interact with Power BI Desktop models programmatically. It can read model structure, run DAX queries, create and modify measures and relationships, perform bulk operations like renaming and documenting many objects at once, auto-translate metadata, and run advanced analytics — all driven by natural language and processed locally on Windows or macOS.
Why use it
Use it when you want AI-native semantic modeling against a running Power BI Desktop model with bulk-editing guardrails. It is distributed as binaries (the public repository contains documentation and skills rather than source).
Getting started
Follow the install guide at https://semanticops.dev. A VS Code Marketplace listing is also available (maxanatsko.mcp-engine). Core features are free, with an optional paid Pro tier (adding rollback, testing, and policy enforcement).
